TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The much-awaited rematch of Tuscaloosa native Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury commenced Saturday night at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
While both heavyweights were undefeated at the start of the fight and their previous match ended in a draw, Fury dominated Wilder for seven whole rounds.
Once Wilder’s co-trainer Mark Breland saw Wilder receive a serious blow to the ear that impacted his equilibrium, Breland threw in the towel. That earned Fury a TKO victory, and Wilder’s first defeat in his career.
Wilder said he intends to call for a third fight against Fury. While fans were expecting the best, the Bronze Bomber could not compete with the Gypsy King, forcing the title of World Heavyweight Champion to go to Fury.
After the fight, Wilder said he was disappointed that he couldn’t finish the fight, but it’s not the end of the world as far as he’s concerned.
“I’m doing good,” Wilder said. “You know things like this happen. The best man won tonight, but my trainer, my coach, my side threw in the towel and you know I’m ready to go out on my shield.”
