Berry Wildcats at Northside Rams
By WVUA 23 Sports Reporter Tatumn Vaught
Northside hosted Berry for their home opener last Thursday and won the game 37-6.
Braden Green runs the ball in for the first touchdown of the night for the Rams.
However, Northside’s defense would be the star of the night as Keiton Camp forced a fumble while Brendan Parsons snatched it up for a Rams’ recovery.
On Berry’s following drive, the Wildcats attempted to make a play, but junior Justin Montgomery came up with a big interception for the Rams to continue their impressive gameplay.
If that wasn’t enough, Jace McNutt ran the ball up the middle 11-yards in the second quarter which gave Northside yet another touchdown and put them up 23-0 at the half.
Northside will travel to Winfield this Friday and are hoping to continue the season with another win.
Tuscaloosa County Wildcats at Paul W. Bryant Stampede
By WVUA 23 Sports Reporter Tatumn Vaught
TCHS battled against the Stampede, winning 53-26 over Bryant for their first game of the season.
The Wildcats got off to a hot start on the first drive of the game when quarterback Brax Garrison found senior running back Tyzavious Glass for an 11-yard touchdown.
Bryant tried to make a play to come back, but the pass by quarterback Cameron Ellis got intercepted by Jon Hayden Raper and he took it all the way to the house for a touchdown! TCHS increased their lead to 20-0 in the first quarter.
The Stampede did eventually get on the board when receiver Tobias Burrell ran it in for their first touchdown of the night.
With 20 seconds left on the clock before halftime, TCHS’s Garrison fired it 49-yards down the field to WR Gavin Gardner for the touchdown. The score at the half was 33-6, with TCHS looking strong for the rest of the game.
Bryant will play Lanier at home, while TCHS will host Hillcrest both on Friday at 7 p.m.
Sipsey Valley Bears at Northridge Jaguars
By WVUA 23 Sports Reporter Jack Hutchens
Northridge hosted Sipsey Valley for their home opener last Friday and ended up defeating the Bears 28-6.
Early in the first, a high snap was snatched up by No. 18 Christopher Jack and he ran it straight up the gut for the Jaguars’ first touchdown.
Sipsey Valley tried to take over when Ryan Barger decided to air it out deep, but Northridge’s Kollyn Shelnutt intercepted it and was downed at the 3-yard line.
Following the interception, the Jaguars went on a 97-yard drive that was capped off with a touchdown by senior Witt Winfield.
In the next Northridge possession, Corey White ran to the back pylon and caught yet another Jaguar touchdown to extend their lead to 21-6 over Sipsey at the half.
The Bears travel to Hale County this Friday to attempt redemption. Northridge will visit the Central Falcons in hopes to earn another win.
Homewood Patriots at Hillcrest Patriots
By WVUA 23 Sports Reporter Matthew Travis
Hillcrest High School hosted Homewood in a battle of the Patriots last Friday, but Homewood came out on top winning 37-34 in their home opener.
At third and ten from the 14, Homewood’s Woods Ray took the snap and found Jackson Parris in the end zone to put Homewood on the board first.
Hillcrest didn’t remain scoreless for long, the following drive, Ethan Crawford had the ball on the one-yard line and took it in on the QB keeper to tie it at seven in the first quarter.
When Homewood got the ball back, Woods Ray found JC Daniel, who had a single defensive player between him and the end zone. Ray broke the tackle and took it to the house for a 64-yard touchdown. Homewood once again took the lead and kept it going into the half.
Hillcrest will travel to Tuscaloosa County High this Friday for their second game of the season starting at 7:00 p.m.
Homewood will host Vestavia Hills on Friday night as well.
Thompson Warriors at Oxford Yellow Jackets
By WVUA 23 Sports Executive Producer Stu McCann
The Thompson Warriors scored six touchdowns in the first half of its 55-0 win over Oxford last Friday. It was the season-opener for both teams, but Thompson’s performance was much more impressive.
Thompson’s offensive production was a group effort. The Warriors got two first-half touchdowns from running back Brandon Franklin, and to go along, three first-half touchdown passes from quarterback Connor Harrell. The Thompson defense matched the offense’s effectiveness. The Warriors did not allow Oxford to get a single first down in the first half.
Thompson will host Sparkman on Friday for their first home game, while Oxford will play at home, once again, against Pleasant Grove.
Mars Hill Bible Panthers at Jasper Vikings
By WVUA 23 Videographer Keith Dobbins
Jasper’s coach Philip Bailey started his second season as the head coach with a win against Mars Hill Bible, 35-6.
The defense came out hot when Vikings’ Cole Sargent had a huge tackle against the Panthers.
Jasper didn’t slack off offensively either as Spencer Rosenfeld went to work hitting WR Kevon Samuels at the goal line, putting the Vikings up 7-0.
Following a muffed punt, Rosenfeld went to the air again hitting Jaden Caldwell for a huge gain down the field. Treyvon Stewart picked up the remaining yards in the following play, putting Jasper up 21-0 at the half.
Jasper hosts their second home game of the season on Friday, welcoming 1-0 Cullman to their stadium.
Mars Hill Bible will host East Limestone on Friday.
