TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- Alabama Women’s Club Rugby team’s spring season is in full swing. Although the team plays year-round, the spring season is particularly competitive for these women.
While a majority of their matches are played away, the first matches of the season were in Birmingham and at their home pitch at the UREC against UTC, Georgia Tech, and UGA. Mostly focused on their match against UGA, being the most competitive matchup of the weekend, the team aimed to outrun the bulldogs and keep the score high while being aggressive on defense. The Tide beat Georgia 31-24 that day, and ended up winning the other games that weekend.
The team also participated in their Mardi Gras tournament in New Orleans this past weekend and performed extremely well, for example winning 27-0 in a match against SIU. Standout players in that tournament included Rachel Niemara, with a hat trick, as well as Casli Waugh and T Owens.
The matches are conveniently scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays that allow the women to focus on their school work and practices during the week, and travel on the weekends. The team typically practices on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7p.m. to 9p.m. but the extreme flooding and consistent rain in Tuscaloosa has prevented a normal practice schedule. Although the team is competitive and requires a fairly high commitment level, the club is open to all experience levels and recruits throughout the year.
The team’s next match is scheduled for March 7th, at Life University located in Marietta, Georgia.
